Credit card processing can take many forms in our society today. We use it in almost every facet of our lives, whether it be paying for gas, or food or even ordering products online. In the past the only want to use credit cards were to make a carbon copy of the slip with the amount and mail them into the merchant processing bank to be processed there. Today there are much easier ways, either by swiping your card, where a magnetic strip is read, or entering your information on a webpage or on a computer, or even typing in the numbers on a terminal. Internet credit card processing and ecommerce credit card processing are some of the fastest growing needs in the field.
Even though the process to get the cards processed have seen a large streamlining, the backend processes are still relatively the same. Retailers process credit cards through merchant accounts. A merchant account is not actually an account at all but a type of contract between the retailer, a bank and whatever intermediary is doing the processing of the cards. The processor will charge a fee of a small percentage of the total sale and then pays the bank the money they are owed, once the authorization has been verified.
If you want to get an account with Visa or Mastercard, you need to have a large volume of transactions, and this isn’t for everyone. You have to be a very large player to get an account with these two giants. Luckily, there are independent organizations , called (MSP) Member Service Providers . These are authorized agents that act as ways for small businesses to enable them to meet their needs for processing. It makes it really nice, because they don’t have to worry about a certain quota of transactions to keep up with, and the amount of transactions can be much much lower. However, you will get breaks on fees if you have more transactions, so it is good to process as much as you can.
